<< HomeHave New Articles E-Mailed To You! Nextel Cup Points System To Be Modified? Tuesday, July 18, 2006 Reports are that Brian France, CEO of NASCAR, is considering modifying the points system for the Nextel Cup for next season. This would likely be an adaptation of changes made in reaction to the season put in the bag early in 2003 by Matt Kenseth, a year in which he only made it to victory lane once, not providing much drama for fans. In 2004, to prevent this, the format was changed to bring the top of the pack tighter for the final ten races, specifically ranking the top 10 drivers in points, plus any others within 400 points of the leader, then restructuring their points so that there are 5 points between first and second place, five points between second and third place, and so on. This made things tighter, definitely, but is quite a drag for a top driver with a healthy lead. There is discussion about the merits of granting more points to the first place driver or a smaller group of drivers in the lead, such as the top three or top five, at the time of this restructuring, with a belief by many that the effort required to be in first place at that point deserves more than a mere 5 point lead over second place. There is also discussion regarding establishing a seperate points system among this final cut for the last ten races. There is no word on when the changes, if any, will be announced. Stay posted. 7:03 PM Comments: Post a Comment << Home |
